ISLOTIMES: Tell us about your life , ups and downs?
IYLA: My life feels a bit like a movie to be honest, very full of dramatic twists and turns but giving details would be like giving spoilers, I’d rather let my music speak for me.
ISLOTIMES: Your age when you started singing?
IYLA: When I was a toddler I’d always sing at the top of my voice, no proper lyrics, just a bunch of random words put together. I realized I had potential when I moved to Pakistan and was immediately put into the school choir.
ISLOTIMES: Tell about your childhood?
IYLA: Well I came into being at an inconvenient time early on a Friday morning in July, 1992. Born of a union worthy of UN recognition My dada is Greek Cypriot, my dadi is Irish and my mum is of Pathan/ Muhajir descent. I grew up in the UAE and enjoyed six years as an only child. Saw the world, then came to Pakistan!
ISLOTIMES: Tell about your personal life?
IYLA: What a personal question, hahaha. I’m a preschool teacher and I consider myself to be a good cook.
ISLOTIMES: Tell about the place you were born in?
IYLA: I was born in Islamabad, the most beautiful city in the world!
ISLOTIMES: Tell about your Native Hometown?
IYLA: I’ve spent most of my life in Islamabad.
ISLOTIMES: Tell about your studies and grades from class pre-nursery Onwards?
IYLA: When I was in the UAE I attended The International School Of Chouiefat, I think my grades were okay but I was always horrible at math. In Pakistan I was inititally at PSI but had to move to the UK because my dadi was ill. I attended public school there which was a horrible experience because I got picked on a lot. On coming back I went to LGS, both in Islamabad and Lahore. I also spent a few months in Karachi attending CAS, which was an amazing school and that’s the first time I made a complete song. At the moment I am waiting for my student visa to come so I can go pursue my higher studies in Malaysia, I plan on doing a bachelors in mass communication from the University of Linkokwing.
ISLOTIMES: Fell in love with anyone?
IYLA: Yes, I’m very much in love with a very handsome, ginger individual named Ollie (hes a cat if you haven’t already figured out).
ISLOTIMES: Your wish which you want to get true?
IYLA: To be taken seriously.
ISLOTIMES: What's the part of singing in your life?
IYLA: Singing is my escape. When I’m happy, when I’m sad, it doesn’t really matter I’m better at singing how I feel than talking about it.
ISLOTIMES: Your favorite singer?
IYLA: Ohh, I have loads. I take inspiration from Dido, Imogen Heap, Tori Amos, Kurt Cobain, Etta Fitzgerald and the legendary Nusrat Sahab.
ISLOTIMES: The person you hate the most?
IYLA: Hate is an ugly emotion, its something I don’t think I’ve ever felt before.
ISLOTIMES: The place you want to visit and you like it the most?
IYLA: Home is where the heart is.
ISLOTIMES: Have you ever performed on a big event? Feelings?
IYLA: I haven’t done any big events, though I have performed in the school choir backing up Tina Sani.
ISLOTIMES: So Message for your fans ?
IYLA: Before you open your mouth to say something about another person, just put yourself in their shoes and think about all the things you don’t know about them and their lives and how you’d feel if someone said the same thing about you.
ISLOTIMES: Views about Islotimes?
IYLA: You guys are great and I love ya’ll for promoting underground talent like me. Keep it up! \m/
